To be honest, when I accepted the request to review this book, I expected either a cut-and-dry list of steps which entrepreneurs could take to build their business, or a Tony Robbins style positive thinking cheerleader script with invitations to sign up for seminars conducted by the author and/or links to purchase more of the author’s products. I was pleasantly surprised when Ms. Lumazar proved me wrong.
Lumazar discusses every aspect of business, from the best business strategies, correct mindset of business owners, to the ideal way of designing the office in a way that suits the business needs. She talks about the significance of having knowledge about tools like Google analytics, being able to identify click farms, mastering money management skills, and the importance of being up-to-date with technology. Lumazar talks not only about the personal traits of good leaders, but also emphasizes on the importance of creating brands and logos for the business. I especially liked the section describing the power of color in designing logos representing a business brand. This concept was something that had never occurred to me before. It was interesting to know how different color combinations affect the way a brand is perceived by its customers.
According to Dominica, the ultimate goal of your leadership role is empowering others. In this book, Dominica presents five simple leadership foundations that will keep you focused on empowering others. Her leadership styles are reasonable and applicable, somewhat similar to the leadership styles explained in Harvard Business Reviews’ On Managing People. Dominica opined, “There is not just one effective leadership style, but there are strategies and styles that are more effective than others.” Well, I somewhat agree, but I think that leadership style should be based on a contingency; not only based on the leader’s personality, and should not be a permanent style as what worked out fine today may not work out fine tomorrow. Different settings require different approaches.
More than a business book, Empowered is teaching its readers about making the most out of life’s opportunities, shedding away anxieties and overlooking people’s expectations of us. We are encouraged to do whatever is best for us, for our well being and to constantly help the people around us. I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because I believe that if a leader decides to follow all the steps presented in it, their company will thrive, along with its workers and customers.
