The Reel Sisters is the story of five friends all fishing enthusiasts. We learn about their personality and follow along with their lives during good and bad times, together or apart.
The beginning of the book focuses on four of the women. Rose is the oldest of the group as well as its mother figure. She started fishing as a young child and has continued ever since. Sophie is a greenhouse farmer, as a small girl she would hunt with her family but when she became an adult, she turned to fly fishing as a more nature-friendly sport. Veronica is a city girl and the contrary to your typical fisher. However, it only took her a plane flight to meet Sophie and be convinced to try the activity. Veronica finds fishing a great way to relax and she noticed it improved her business abilities. Amanda is the youngest. She takes care of her two toddlers while her husband is serving in Afghanistan. She isn't able to practice fly fishing often due to her tight schedule, but when she does, it gives her a much-needed break and it is her way of letting stress go. When everyone is available, the four women meet at a cabin in the forest for the weekend. They not only reunite to fly fish but also to be in each other's company. They are all very different, yet they know and understand each other well. Later on, they stumble in a very uncommon way on Melody who becomes quickly part of the group as well.
I really enjoyed the way Michelle Cummings structured her book. Each chapter is from the perspective of one of the women. This way we get to know personally and in detail each individual, this made me appreciate them more. Every few chapters the book gets separated into sections. They are all accompanied by small extracts of fly-fishing guides, which in my opinion, adds to the instructive fishing aspect of the book and its atmosphere. The plot in itself is very entertaining and has a great flow. Though the theme might sound rather unexciting, I think the author presented a realistic yet eventful storyline.
Michelle Cummings writes mostly in the first person when narrating from the view of her protagonists. When doing so, her style remains the same, but the language and vocabulary vary from person to person. It proves the quality of the story because her characters really have their own personality and it definitely translates through the text. The editorial quality is very good, and I found no mistake in the whole book. I rate The Reel Sisters 4 out of 4 stars. In my opinion, the audience who would enjoy this book are fishermen and fisherwomen because they will comprehend all the technical words mentioned about the sport. I would also recommend it to people who like books revolving around friendship and love.
I would say that I was pleasantly surprised by The Reel Sisters and I really liked the story in general. I would recommend it! And I’ll finish with a quote from the book "What are you wading for?".
