I Will Make of Thee A Great Nation by Val D. Greenwood is a collection of bible stories from the old testament. The book contains more than 200 stories told in the modern language used today versus the classic Hebrew. This makes them easier to understand not just as a reader, but as a believer of the Christian faith as well. The story of Cain and Abel showed this the most because I always thought it was just a story of how jealousy affects brotherhood. But it also shows how a lack of faith in God can send a person down the wrong path. It’s pieces like that in this reading that are discovered by the author taking time to translate the scriptures for us.

What I like most about the book is the author made a dedication to his current wife and his wife before that passed away. I could tell that he put a lot of time into writing it so that it is as accurate as possible. He also got the opinions of those close to him, and that added warmth to the book for me.

I also like that translating the stories made them shorter. Which makes them ideal for a quick read when traveling. The book also allows readers to form their views on God rather than just listening to our elders think. For example, I was taught by my elders to never question God’s work, but Abraham asked God many questions before the rescue of Lot. God still gave him many blessings

I dislike that even the smallest details were translated. An example of this is when it was explained that God organized the earth rather than created it. In my opinion, it only matters that the world started with God. However, I understand the author was making sure everything was understood well. Another thing is how God is pronounced in Hebrew so many times. This is not a dislike I just didn’t grow up hearing God being called Jehovah a whole lot

I think it’s a wonderful book! Anybody that wants to know more about God or strengthen their relationship with Him should read this book. You don’t have to be overly religions to enjoy the reading, but if you are opposed to all religious things this isn’t the book for you. I rated it 3 out of 4 stars because it isn’t the bible, but it is a great secondary source. I can see myself using it for bible study and introducing this book to members of my family to use during church. Even reading a story or two to my kids at bedtime. It’s a very versatile book that I encourage all to read.

I was captured by the colourful cover as well as the title. But, as it turns out, I overlooked the subtitle. Whilst religious literature is not for me, I enjoyed reading your nicely-written review :) Thank you :)
