Are you a newly graduate looking for your first job? Are you struggling to find work because you've been unemployed for a long time? Do you currently have a job but wants to apply for a higher position or even change your career? If you answered yes to any of the questions above, then you should read Dr. Tim Johnson's Finding a Job in Tough Times.
Professor Johnson shared his Six Steps to a Paycheck which helped him stay at the top of his game in job finding. I like the fact that the author himself has gone through difficult times searching for a job with an incomplete college degree when he was younger, so I’m sure that he can clearly understand what one is going through as a job seeker. Now that Dr. Johnson has found his passion, with two masters and a doctoral degree, he wants to share his insights on how to gain employment. The tips he shared have proven to be effective for his newly graduate students. And the author is confident that if readers diligently follow his advice, one would be successful in getting employed.
To be totally honest, I have mixed reactions about this book that's why I rate this 3 out of 4 stars. There were minor typographical errors, which does not really deter one from getting the essence of the author’s advice. However, the recommendations offered in the book seemed common to many resources about seeking employment. The author shared practical advice and even gave links to websites that are definitely useful. Though the tips on how to improve your resume and how to prepare yourself for interviews were helpful, I felt like these are the usual tips that I see elsewhere.
The thing that makes this book special is the workbook aspect of it. This book, as the author describes, is a journal of change. This is not an ordinary personal development book. This is actually a workbook with exercises that readers have to answer in order to fully take advantage of the book's goal: to help readers attain a job in their dream career. The author encourages readers to use a stenographer’s notebook to answer the exercises in the workbook. Readers can examine themselves, redefine their career goals and finally land their dream job.
I think the exercises on the book are very beneficial to anyone who's not only job hunting but also to those who are feeling hopeless at their current state and wants to redefine their life. If you want a quick fix, then this is not for you. But if you're willing to stop for a while, contemplate on yourself and become a better you, then grab a pen and a notebook, read this book, and start your journey in finding a job through tough times.
