Learning to play the guitar is a dream of the most musical instrumentalist. But the success rate is minimal because of the overwhelming and complicated nature of the learning process. Whereas some give up along the path, others get discouraged by the dread of having to go through the painful process. In his book Learn to Play Guitar, Gareth Evans has written a comprehensive guide for beginners to intermediate players. This novel provides an in-depth explanation of the techniques of learning to play the guitar. It contains over a hundred illustrations and stretching exercises. The author has treated lots of subjects which include changing between chords, strumming, major and minor scale, basic lead guitar techniques, etc. This is a non-fiction book published in 2012.
To make the guitar string names easier to remember, a mnemonic has been used; Every Angry Dog Grow Big Ears. This is represented with the alphabets E A D G B E. Learning the string names is simplified because a labelled diagram is provided along with the mnemonic.
I must commend Gareth Evans for making the learning of the guitar more practical and enjoyable. The illustrations and the photographic details are expressive and bursting with life. The beautifully designed cover tells more about the contents of the book. This arouses the interest of readers to learn immediately.
The systematic presentation of the lessons has made learning easier than you could ever think of. The information does not sound overwhelming because it is well-paced and concise. It is written in various fonts on a white background. The font sizes are visible enough to save readers from the hassle of straining their eyes during the reading process. Readers can download the audio tracks of this novel for free from a website provided. The audio tracks serve as a supplementary learning aid that promotes self-tuition.
The author has explained all the technical words so an average reader will have little or no difficulty during the reading process. There are no spelling or grammatical errors. The novel is well-edited because there are no visible typographical errors. I can see a lot of research has gone into the writing of this book. This is a credit to the author.
This novel is a great manual for people who want to learn to play the guitar. It is a great reminder for advanced learners who have forgotten the details. Music students will find this a useful reference material. However, a lazy person may not attempt to read it.
I rate Learn to Play Guitar by Gareth Evans 4 out of 4 stars. The novel is both educational and entertaining. Gareth has successfully simplified a task that many people consider difficult. This novel deserves a distinction because it is well written. People who learn to play this instrument are equipped with a skill that can be beneficial to them in their lifetime. However, I recommend the author writes the novel in other languages so people from all walks of life benefit from it.
