Have you ever been unemployed with no idea where to even start a job search? Dr. Tim Johnson, who has two masters degrees and one doctorate degree, wrote Finding A Job in Tough Times for those who are struggling with landing a job. Using his own personal approach and a colloquial tone, knowledge is presented effectively with humor and personality.
The book begins with describing what an interviewer will be looking for in an applicant. As a former interviewer, Dr. Tim Johnson knows what he is speaking about, and presents how to woo an interviewer clearly. The book then moves on to specifically classifying the reader. Readers are able to define themselves and discover their skills and abilities through Johnson’s use of journal writing exercises. Through 48 exercises, the book walks through everything one must do in a job search, and at the end, the reader is an expert in knowing themselves as well as what they must do to earn a great paying occupation.
Dr. Tim Johnson writes in a way that is interactive for readers. All of the information gained while reading is not all in the book, but also in self-discovery. Within each chapter is a journal writing exercise, each formatted to aid the reader in mastering and solidifying the information that was given in the chapter. Recent studies have proven that people learn more effectively when they are teaching themselves. Thus, this unique approach at writing allows the reader to learn more than simply reading material.
This book does not have incredible sentence structure or fantastic writing, but it definitely fulfills the purpose. I like how it gives a different perspective and makes the reader see themselves through the eye of the employer. I also enjoy the connection that is gained with the author that makes reading the book entertaining. I like how simple and easy the book was to use. However, I did not like how short the book was. 78 pages is not enough to fully understand the job world. I also disliked the lower quality of the writing. I felt that the author could have used more complex sentences and vocabulary to capture understanding most effectively.
This book was created as a nonfiction informatory piece on finding jobs. Given its step-by-step process through the requirements of a job search and the journal activities, it completely fulfills the purpose. Because of this, and considering the experienced and factual approach, I rate this book 4 out of 4. I suggest this book to anyone who is having difficulty finding a fitting job.
