In the city of Soulhire, the capital of Voulhire, a court case is being judged regarding whether the country is responsible or not for the people living in war conditions on some neighboring islands called the Lands of the Princes. Under discussion is the moral argument to alleviate their misery by paying to transport them to Voulhire and integrate them into Voulhirian society, yet not knowing if any consequences will affect the Voulhirian lifestyle. At the same time, Galen and Rowan decide to travel to Soulhire with Demetrius to help him find out the latest developments in the city of Yamon Soul, as well as the identity of the new Eiodi. After their arriving, magical creatures from the Land of the Princes, called nightynights, attack the city, interrupting the court activities and creating havoc among the inhabitants. More and more powerful enemies come, bringing more casualties to the kingdom.

We are Voulhire: Someone Else’s End is the third book of the We are Voulhire Series, written by Matthew Tysz. The author doesn’t give any details about the previous books, so for a better understanding the reader should start by reading the first and second books in order to get a grasp on the characters and events. The author kept the main themes from the previous books, this one still being a fantasy story filled with adventure and magic, having as characters lords and warriors and embedding some dark topics, such as monsters, demons or scenes of torture and mass killing.

What I enjoyed the most about this book is that the author managed to include character development and political conflict scenes into the story while still keeping it fast-paced. The reader is witnessing not only the strengthening of the friendship between Galen, Rowan and Demetrius, but also their individual personal development. Galen is not the scared foreigner from the first book, but a confident and determined man ready to fight to protect his friends, while Rowan is learning how to put aside his arrogance to consolidate their bond. At the same time, the author portrays how the people closest to us can turn into our greatest enemies, with Nartik, the king’s personal adviser, informing the Emperor of Lullabies, the ruler of the Land of the Princes, about the king’s plan to offer home for refugees from his land, decision that causes the attack that left the king dead and many other people injured or killed.

Another aspect that I enjoyed while reading the book is the twist and the style of writing. Matthew Tysz builds the suspense right until the end of the book, the climax being the fight between Rowan and the leader of the demons with whom the reader got acquainted in the previous book. In this way, the author merges the plots from this book and the previous one, detail that made the book so much more interesting. The style of writing was so amazing that it made me visualize the storyline so clear and it created some pictures so authentic and realistic it felt like I was watching a movie.

I will give this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was extremely well written and really well edited, which made me enjoy it even more. The plot is intriguing, the story is thrilling and the characters have such distinctive personality traits that make the reader want to understand them better and to see more of them. I would recommend this book to any adult reader who enjoys a good fantasy novel with a touch of magic. If you are sensitive to some explicit themes or violence, maybe this book is not suitable for you.

It's great when an author is able to bring those threads back from previous books and finally wrap up the story lines in the last book in a series.
