The Dark Web Murders (The Inspector Sheehan Mysteries Book 4) by Brian O’ Hare is an engaging murder mystery that drops the reader right in the middle of death and despair, and its power to pull you in from the beginning keeps you interested until the very end. I have to admit, though, I was reluctant at first to start reading this book, simply because of the fact that I am that type of reader that does not like to start reading a book in the middle of a series, let alone a fourth book in a series. But, the introductory information of characters and the description of them at the beginning of the book helped tremendously, which allows this novel to be read as a standalone book.

After reading the introductory information, then the glossary of Irish terms, then moving on to the notice to American readers that this book is in British spelling, and then the prologue, I settled right in and became comfortable with the ebb and flow of the main characters. O’Hare presented them like they were old friends that dropped by for a visit, which allowed me to easily get a feel for how they work together to solve the gruesome murders that have landed on their doorstep.

The Dark Web Murders centers around Chief Inspector Jim Sheehan and his notable team at work on the case of murderer, Nemein, The Club, and the deaths that seem to be connected to this highly secretive club of wealthy members. Nemein is an individual that goes on a very personal killing spree, eloquently boasting about his “justified” killings through his blog on the Dark Web, but the reader is left wondering who the real murderer truly is when they finally learn of what The Club is all about in the end.

Granted, O’Hare’s novel is not meant for the faint of heart. There are some very tragic circumstances within this book that involve the most innocent of our society. Circumstances that can leave a reader upset. Details of what happens to many of the victims are well written. On one hand, these situations are brushed upon lightly to leave it open for the reader’s imagination, but on the other hand, they are quite direct to further the novel along. This mix allows the writing to flow almost effortlessly through the book.

I give The Dark Web Murders 3 out of 4 stars. What I like about this book is that it does drop you right into the thick of the madness. It’s an interesting read that offers clues directing you to who the killer is--just like a good murder mystery should. It gives you information upfront about location, language, and a list of characters, and it leaves you guessing who the killer is until the very end. If you are the type that enjoys a good murder mystery and can handle reading about violent crime, you will enjoy this book. If you are an individual who is sensitive to such things, this novel is not for you.

What I dislike about this book is that it does have a few moments in it that seem to drag a bit, particularly in the middle. And I must admit that the errors I found threw me off while I was reading, forcing me to read passages more than once to see if I was reading them correctly. But, overall, The Dark Web Murders is a fine read.
