The book Adrift by Charlie Sheldon is a book with a storyline which keeps one on tenterhooks. Apart from having a sad ending, I would say it was a very captivating, action-filled and thrilling book. You just don't want it to end but as we know, everything that has a beginning must have an end.

Charlie Sheldon begins the narrative on a Sunday, 5th of December whereby the captain of the Seattle Express, Steve Procida and his crew members had been woken up by the loud fire alarm that kept ringing non-stop. Part of the ship had caught fire and there was thick smoke everywhere. They all tried fighting the fire together as a team in the windy and rainy weather but to no avail. The wind kept fanning the flames, even more, making the fire to escalate.

On seeing that there was no place a person could survive while the fire raged, the captain gave the order for all of his crew members to abandon ship. Captain Steve made sure to inform Buckhorn, the company owning the ship, about the tragedy. Buckhorn sent out tugs to rescue them. The Dark Cloud's crew were free and would come to help rescue them as well. The Warhorse tug would be used to tow the ship.

The book is quite interesting to read in that it keeps you hooked and wanting to know what happened next. The author brings out the survival aspect very well with it being the main theme of the novel. He also clearly shows how the crew members were ready to do anything and everything before giving up. This can be depicted in our day to day lives as human beings. At times we are on the verge of giving up whenever we face different challenges but this narrative should motivate us enough not to give up easily.

There are two parts that I liked so much in the novel. One is when Heather and Charlie went out to hunt for seals to eat with fellow crew members. It is not something that you see every day whereby a lady is brave enough to hunt a seal. The second part I liked was when Anne and William decided to go get help instead of other crew members. Some didn't find the idea to be quite appealing and eventually, it cost them both. They sacrificed themselves for their fellow crew members.

I would recommend this book to readers who love adventure at sea kind of tales. Quite thrilling indeed. The book was well edited apart from a few grammatical errors here and there. I think proofreading was not thoroughly done and it is for this reason that I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. The book is a must read, you won't regret it.
