A Roadmap to Career Success: 25 Tips for College Bound Students by John G Bendt is an excellent book designed to help high school students pursue their dream career. Bendt includes 25 tips throughout the book that students should follow on their journey to working life. The book provides in-depth knowledge on how to firstly choose a suitable career path, how to market yourself, the skills that make you employable and how to develop them, and how to explore and assess job opportunities.

A Roadmap to Career Success is well structured and organised, which makes it an easy read to students, who are the target audience. For example, each stage of the roadmap to career success is separated by different chapters, with the 25 condensed tips provided in bold throughout the book, which I find nicely breaks up the chapters. Bendt also includes the use of charts and tables as examples of positioning statements, how to record skill sets, and pros and cons analysis of different occupations. These, along with the 25 tips, are included in the appendix, making it easier for the reader to later refer to.

What I liked most about this book was the author’s desire to help young adults in pursuing a career that is competitive, interesting to them, and can provide them with their desired lifestyle. Bendt explains how he taught his four children the journey to being successful, and how they are all now doing well. This backs up the credibility of Bendt’s advice, and I believe that his enthusiasm to help others should be applauded.

This is the first book I have read regarding career planning that is clear and directional, and written in a structured and concise way. The author himself explains that he knows of no other book that describes how to achieve success in working life which is directed at students. I therefore believe that this book provides original and important guidelines that there was a gap in the market for.

I believe that the audience that would most likely benefit from the advice in this book are high school students. I wish I had a book like this when I was in school, as it successfully highlights the wise choices that should be made to prepare for career success in the future. However, A Roadmap to Career Success also provides information and guidance for those who are in college, taking interviews, and wishing to advance in their career, which makes it suitable for most people. I came across only one grammar error when reading this book, which leads me to believe that it was well-edited. I therefore rate this book 4 out of 4 stars, and I will likely refer to this book in the future.
