As a little child and through my middle age years, the word reincarnation was often heard in stories or folktales. Its message was constantly repeated by my grandparents, great-aunts and great-uncles, or any elder member of the family priviledged to have had such stories handed down to them through generations. The schools were not left out, as novels of reincarnation were part of basic study curriculum for teaching culture and traditions of the land.
I also witness (till date) people being named after a person or god, believed to have existed or achieved important feats in a family’s history. These assumptions or realities usually arise from similar behavioural attitudes, or striking resemblances in body features, speech patterns, thought processes, etc. Whichever is the case, Yesterday by Samyann gave me an opportunity to enjoy the concept of reincarnation told from an entirely new perspective.
What made Amanda and Mark feel they had known each other before the rescue? Did they really meet in the life before? If yes, how? Why was their certainty more real when they were around the clock? What role did the clock and the cat play specially in this? These and many more questions kept my eyes glued to my phone’s screen, and my mind fastened on unlocking the mysteries that surrounded the main characters each time I read "A Novel of Reincarnation". My favourite characters were Oprah, Mark, Bonnie, godmother Mary and Daniel.
Samyann had intelligently told this story with sufficient twists and turns in the relational ties that existed between Amanda and Mark. I am therefore rating Yesterday 3 out of 4 stars because it gave me much joy while reading. Each chapter was filled with good suspense and humour that had me turning onto the next, and the next, and the next. The inclusion of expressions from earlier centuries – 18th & 19th – was also a delight to read. However, I visited my dictionary too frequently to look up words for better comprehension.
“A Novel of Reincarnation” should definitely be made into a movie because I already played the role of a director with my imaginations while reading it. The lesson I picked from this book is this; 'you can achieve whatever you dream of, have whatever you desire, be whoever you aspire, as long as you trust your guts and helpers'. People will always have specific roles to play in our lives – you can ask Oprah. I recommend it to everyone who loves suspense related books.
