This is a review of The Chauvinist's Guide to Modern Romance by Morris Rollins. This piece of literature paints itself as a guide to romance for all modern men. It gives historical perspectives on the interaction between men and women, profiles different types of men, and gives overarching principles for men to apply in order to achieve romantic success.
I rate The Chauvinist's Guide to Modern Romance 1 out of 4 stars. I was unable to rate this book any higher because I was thoroughly confused as to the writer's intention. Is this book meant to be taken seriously? Is it meant to be satirical? I sincerely hope that Morris Rollins wanted this book to be seen as a joke because I couldn't view it as anything more than that.
Unfortunately, this guide for chauvinists suffered from many flaws. The first thing I noticed, and disliked, about this book was its pictures. Not only did they make the book seem juvenile, but they served no obvious purpose. They were also tacky and off-putting. Another negative was the proliferation of stereotypes and generalizations. For example, the first page of the book portrays men as being hopelessly captive to the manipulation of women; elsewhere women are said to be inferior to men and to all want to be ruled by the right man. Later, the author wrote, "there is nothing more important to men than sex". Undoubtedly, there are many people who would agree with each of the preceding statements, but the author should have provided some basis or empirical data for his claims. This is especially due to the fact that he used those stereotypes as the foundation of his guidelines. The absence of such data made me believe that the author simply wanted to stir controversy and was not intending for his work to be taken seriously.
Another negative for me was the writing style and proficiency of the author. The wording and structure of many sentences were amateur and showed a lack of skill. There were also many short paragraphs which made the work seem like a children's book.
I would not recommend The Chauvinist's Guide to Modern Romance to anyone because no part of me enjoyed the reading experience. However, I humbly acknowledge that it may hold some appeal for certain types of people. The unpretentiousness and down-to-earth nature of Rollins' writing may appeal to those who dislike the tendency of authors to use long and uncommon words in order to appear skilled and knowledgeable. This publication may also appeal to those who enjoy pictures in adult literature, which is very uncommon.
