Manifesto for a Cancer Patient by Colleen Huber, is a guideline and a base of information for patients seeking alternative advice from other sources other than their doctor. The author lays out her own experience working with patients and fellow doctors, giving readers a backstory on the what the author has dealt with in her past. In her book, she talks about how patients are in charge of their own care and what path they want to take to treat their cancer. Patients go to see doctors at hospitals and they are told that the only treatment that will help them is chemotherapy, radiation, and or surgery. We learn about the chemotherapy industry and how hospitals depend on their support and how the chemotherapy industry depends on the hospitals support in return. Colleen Huber explains the things wrong with chemotherapy and how new research has to be done on better methods, and how medical personnel need to take the time to learn what has been found and how we can better help patients. This way we can make real advancements and help patients suffering now, and in the future, instead of telling them that chemotherapy is the only way. Colleen Huber also takes us through her own medical research on alternative methods and her results. She goes through diet and exercise advice and her reasoning for her diet restrictions and why they work. She believes that seeking naturopathic clinics like her own, gives patients a way to feel like they are in control of their lives. Chemotherapy is not the only way and there may be better ways, healthier ways, without the burden of chemo side effects, to treat this awful disease that we call cancer.

What I disliked the most about this book is the way the medical records are presented. I understand why Colleen Huber felt that she needed to include them. For the everyday reader, it is a lot to take in and if you have no medical background, it is hard to understand. My suggestion would only be to make them easier for the regular reader to understand, that way, they can have a better insight.

The way the author describes how her alternative treatments work is what I found I liked the most about the book. I never thought the we eat, or how we live our lives, had an effect on a disease such as cancer. It makes one think twice about how we are taking care of ourselves. She gives details to every method, showing us her research and backing her points.

After thinking hard about the book, I would give it a 2 out of 4 stars. My reason for giving 2 stars and not 3 or 4 is because at times, the book is difficult to read for a person who has no background in the medical field. For someone who is able to break down that information, it is very useful. I gave the book 2 stars and not 1 due to the fact that the book is interesting and could be a helpful guide to someone suffering from cancer and fellow doctors wanting to learn more about alternative ways for treatment. The grammar in the book was also superb and I did not find any spelling mistakes.

When it comes to looking at the audience demographic, I believe that this book would be best suited for patients who have or have had cancer, or people who are interested in learning about alternate treatment methods to try and overcome cancer. I also would recommend this book to doctors who are in not just the field of oncology, but other fields as well.
