The book Island Games: Mystery of the Four Quadrants by Caleb J. Boyer is an interesting book. I rate it 2 out of 4 stars. I would give it this rating for a few reasons. To start with, the book leaves you on a total cliff hanger, that causes many plot holes. Second, the characters have a very cheesy and stereotypical dialogue. Lastly, the style and grammar of the book were fairly mediocre. However, there were some good things in it. There are some suspenseful chapters that have you sitting on the edge of your seat, and it is very descriptive. I would recommend it to readers interested in Hunger Games or survivalist style books. Readers who are interested in books with a very strong message of friendship would also enjoy it.
First of all, the book leaves you on a complete cliff hanger. The author builds up to the end when the plot finally makes sense, then just cuts it all off. In the book, 2 teenage boys- Matthew and Ryan- wake up on a boat near an island. They have no memories, except that they are best friends. Together, they must figure out who put them there, and why, all while trying to survive. Towards the end of the book, pieces of the plot finally start to connect, answering many questions. Unfortunately, readers never find out what happens. As a reader, that is quite frustrating. It felt pointless to read and get invested in a complex book, only to never find out the ending.
Furthermore, the dialogue in the book was unrealistic, to say the least. It also didn't seem to fit with the target audiences preferences. This book is listed in the "Young Adult" genre. Frankly, the dialogue is not what most young adults would ever say, or want to read. Ryan and Matthew repeatedly mentioned cheesy "life lessons", in a very obvious way. I feel that many young adults would dislike this book based on the dialogue alone.
While this book has some downsides, there are some positive things too. This book does keep you on the edge of your seat in some parts. The book is also very descriptive, the writer did a terrific job at world-building. Readers will really get an idea of what the setting looks like, and how the main characters are feeling. These components do help my over-all view of The Island Games.
In conclusion, Island Games: Mystery of the Four Quadrants has its' pros and cons. It leaves you on a major cliffhanger and has a very stereotypical dialogue. The grammar isn't perfect either. However, it has some redeeming qualities, such as the vivid descriptions and suspense. These are my thoughts on Island Games: Mystery of the Four Quadrants by Caleb J. Boyer.
