I personally don’t think the characters were written very well either; they more often than not seemed mere receptacles for the author’s dialogue, and what I did see of their personalities was kind of one-dimensional. Perhaps this might be because there are so many characters; none of them quite got the screentime a smaller cast would have allowed.

I definitely agree with that. It felt like each character had a trope they fit, and they had trouble getting past that. I think Meat actually grew a little over the book, and he even grew on me. But I don't know if that's just me being a softie, or because he really did have character growth?

"Trying too hard to be funny" seems like a universal comment for this book. A lot of other reviews seem to have felt the same way about his writing. Too bad his attempt at humor/satire fell so flat.

Yeah, Meat did seem to grow a bit by the end of the book! :D And yes to the trope thing--I was kind of disappointed that most of the characters didn't end up growing out of those boxes. *sighs* Thank you for commenting--it's lovely to talk to someone else who's read the book! :)

Yes, I've read a few other critiques of the novel that said this as well! I was quite disappointed with the humour, but I have to give him props for trying. (A few other reviewers do seem to have loved it, though :P Oh well, to each his own!) Thank you for commenting! :D

i've just started reading this myself - am a few chapters in and i already know exactly what you mean, it feels like it's too much for one night, and that theres a little too much going on.
i understand about the humour too, for me it's working, but maybe it'll lose it's charm by the time i reach the end.
v good review though.

Thank you! :D I'm glad the humour is working for you--it's subjective, after all! There is a lot to take in for just one night, but I hope you'll enjoy the book anyway XD
