Re: Rowling vs Tolkien, who created the most creative world?

Post by diggks58 »

I think this is really a matter of opinion. I love both series, however, I do think Tolkien created the better world. I have read all of the lost tale books and works that were published later and I am extremely impressed. The Hobbit was also the first real book that I ever read, so I may be a bit biased.

My opinion towards J.K. Rowling is biased seeing as I never read Tolkien as a child. I loved the world J.K. Rowling created for me and I found her descriptions to be very precise in planting the image and idea in my mind.
With Tolkien I found it to be very creatively written and I found myself enjoying as an adult, but I don't believe if I read it when I was younger I would have enjoyed it as much.

I respect both others and own both sets of series.

I would have to say Tolkien is the most creative and the basis for which others are judged.

They are two separate worlds. So you cannot compare the two.

I would obviously choose Harry Potter over LOTR. I mean, I am a Slytherin. I have been to the Wizarding World of HP in Orlando, I have a pottermore account. I read ALL the J.K Rowling books. I have read and reread, watched and rewatched all the HP books.

I read the Hobbit and loved it. I have tried to read LOTR, but could not get through it all. However, I do love the movies.

However, I do not think it is fair to say one is better than the other. They are both amazing in their own way. They are so different from each other.

Yes, I enjoy both and they are very different. Harry Potter works within our modern world, Tolkien's is another world completely. I much prefer Tolkien, personally. I relate better to the comfort-loving, homey but brave heroes who venture forth into a strange world they wish they could ignore. I am going to be hated for this, but I often found Harry to be rude, selfish and whiney, though that was probably intentional since he is a teenager and is redeemed in every way at the end. But still. As great a read as that series, and as wonderful as the colorful details are and the lovingly woven plot, Tolkien created, not just a secret culture, but a WORLD - continents, pantheons, races, languages, history, philosophy...the greatest fairy tale ever told. Can't beat that in my book. It sucks me in deeper than ANYTHING I've ever read, and there's always more to learn.

I enjoyed both Tolkien's and Rowling's world's. But I think Tolkien's was the most creative world. He created a whole world all to itself with different languages for the peoples of Middle Earth, maps, time lines and family trees, and creatures that didn't exist until he created them.

I loved Harry Potter but have not gotten around to reading anything by Tolkien fully, though I have read snippets here and there. I would say that both authors can both write very creative worlds, but it just depends who you like better.

LOTR was very intricately detailed... characters... scenes.... places were written with a high level of complexity. Although maybe not as complex Harry Potter certainly created for me a more interesting and fascinating world so I would say Rowling.

I say Tolkein because while I like Rowling a little bit more, Tolkein spent a huge amount of time creating his own world and language. Rowling never even mentioned America in any of her books.

Tolkien by far! There is no comparison in my opinion. I mean, he created a language for crying out loud. LOL!

I think Rowling created the more creative world, but I am biased, growing up with Harry Potter and such :)
