I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai

Post by kell_ferguson »

A touching story of one very brave girl who with the support of her father, stood up for rights of all girls to be educated. I am saddened by the statistics of how many girls there are that aren't given the chance to receive an education. It was overwhelming to read about a place that functions the way it does in this day and age. For example the garbage heaps along the roads and so many other simple things that I, living in the western world and a free country take for granted. Such a empowering book that shows what a little courage, a lot of passion and a voice can do to help change the world we all live in.

I haven't read this yet but I did mention my reaction to seeing her on "The Daily Show". Jon Stewart is usually Jon Stewart...but with Malala, you can't help but be awed by so much courage in such a young girl. After she talked for quite some time, Jon leaned over and said "Can you ask your Dad if I can adopt you?".
I can see her growing up and making a difference as an adult too. So many kids in the US that have the advantages of a free, open education...and for whatever reasons they don't want to work that hard. Here is a young woman who almost died for wanting to go to school. Then she survives and is still speaking out. I must read this book. :D

I agree, and had the same reaction to that "Daily Show" appearance.

I also loved the quote from the co-author who worked on the book with Malala - relative to the possibility of Malala receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, the co-author said that her son's reaction was, "she fights with her brother! They can't give her a peace prize!" :)

Her story remarkable, and she's a really inspiring girl. I first saw her on TV when she spoke at the UN on her 16th birthday. She wrote her speech herself and delivered it passionately; ended with: "One child, one teacher, one book, one pen can change the world."

Without doubt a remarkable young woman and fortunate she has such an equally remarkable father.

This book completely blew me away. I started it without many expectations, and her story impacted me beyond belief. You are right; she is an incredibly remarkable woman.

I agree, this book was just amazing to me in many way. Of course, I though Malala was an inspiring girl. What struck me more at times, though, was the backlash she received from her country. That part blew me away in my reading of her book. I lent the book to a friend of mine who was reading it in a public area. A Pakistani woman approached my friend and told her not to believe the lies in the book. That experience emphasized the negativity in the book for me.
