Official Review: Crossing in Time

What if you could go back in time to change your history with the one you love? What if the future of mankind relied on you being able to make the change, even if it meant your death? Crossing in Time is a fantasy/sci-fi novel written by D.L. Orton and Micah McDonald and is the first book in the Between Two Evils series. The novel is told in multiple first person POVs, including Doctor Isabel Sanborn (a specialist in bio-domes and genetics), Diego Nadales (an engineer with a specialty in quantum physics), and Professor Matt Hudson (a physics professor). The different POVs are connected throughout the story and information is provided in a piecemeal fashion that keeps the reader guessing until the very end.
Crossing in Time transitions between multiple time frames and POVs to tell the story of how the world has become destroyed by nuclear weapons and how the individuals must work to change history. When reading the summary for this book I was disappointed that I could not get a clear idea of what it was about because it all seemed so vague; however, after reading the novel I realized that little summary can be given due to so many possible spoilers. To prevent any spoilers, my own review is very vague on the story-line because I think other readers will enjoy the journey as much as I have once they start the book.
The novel starts with Isabel and Diego meeting in Denver, Colorado years after their relationship has ended, but too many hard feelings arise and Isabel walks away from Diego. Suddenly a bomb explodes in a nearby hotel and Diego frantically tries to find Isabel. With the assistance of strangers, Diego is able to save Isabel from the destroyed building and they decide to start their life together. Diego then receives a cryptic message from what he perceives as the future and decides he and Isabel should prepare for the worst to come while also trying to prevent the mistakes of their past.
Several weeks after the explosion, Matt is taken by government officials to review unseen footage of the explosion that Isabel and Diego were involved in. Because of his expertise in physics, he is asked to help them explain what was found in the video. Working with the government, Matt realizes that the find is much more than any of the scientists expected. Soon, the future of the world relies on Matt, Isabel, and Diego to solve the riddles and find the way to save all of mankind before time runs out.
I rated Crossing in Time 4 out of 4 stars. While the different time lines, different POVs, and alternate universes can get a bit confusing, this is an incredible book. The author included a lot of scientific language and knowledge, and in doing so, created characters that felt like actual specialists in their fields. I was worried that some of the knowledge might be over my head, but the author was able to explain everything easily and without distracting from the story. I also enjoyed the way she connected the different POVs, so the reader knew things that many characters did not, but still kept the reader guessing until the last page. I also appreciated that there are hardly any mistakes or errors in the writing and grammar.
I would recommend Crossing in Time for fans of sci-fi novels, who love time-travel and parallel universe plots. This book was really enjoyable and creates a world that I did not want to step away from. The emotions created by the author felt real and the plot kept me guessing until the very end on what would happen. Readers should be warned that the book ends on a cliffhanger, but book two, Lost Time, is set to come out in July 2016. I enjoyed the way this book was written, the unique plot, and the original characters so much, that I have already pre-ordered my copy!
