RANDY LOVE...AT YOUR SERVICE by Shay Carter.
Randy Love...at your service is a work of fiction about a young man named Randy Love. This story did not draw my interest right from the beginning. Randy is the last born child of John and Marjorie Love. He is born to them late in their life when they had not expected him. Marjorie dies a few months after Randy's birth. The story moves to when Randy has taken a gap year from university and he is living with his father. His father insists that he goes back to school but Randy does not want to.
He decides to get a few odd jobs to get some cash. He then decides to take a permanent job at a bank that has very little business. Randy gets bored and decides to sit an exam and apply for a job as a financial advisor at a busier mainstream bank in London. He gets the job and moves to London. We go through his life in multiple rental houses. He has a lot of friends from mostly from school with whom he spends a lot of time with. The father, brother and sister offer him a helping hand as he struggles to settle in London.
This is one of the stories I have read with humour oozing from all the right points. I found myself pausing a number of times to let out a well-deserved laugh. The use of idiomatic expressions and sayings also contributed significantly to the delivery of the story. I found the style of writing for some of the sections to be top notch.
However, the plot of the story was not as engaging as I had expected. I could easily predict the next actions of the main character. He seemed to do most things as planned with minimal interruption. This could have been meant to show that Randy was having an easy life at this point in his life. I am not sure why the author went with this approach.
The sex scenes were described a bit too much for my liking. I was able to skim through them and enjoyed the rest of the story though. I felt that Randy, the main character, was well-developed, which was a good point for the story. Generally, the story was okay. I would have preferred a few more twists in the plot of the book.
The editing and proofreading of the book should be improved. I found several errors mostly in spelling, tenses and a typo. Some articles were added at the wrong places within sentences. A word like ‘on' was written as ‘no' at one point. This reason and the few mentioned above prevented this book from getting a rating above 2 out of 4 stars from me.
I would recommend this book to young adults. Overall, it provides guidance on settling as an adult and living with the people around us.
