Randy Love…at your service by Shay Carter is a fiction book about a guy called Randy and it describes, in a humorous way, everyday life situations that happen in his early 20’s with some short introductions about his early childhood.
Randy Love is a complicated guy, but very determined when it comes to women. In the beginning, this story shows how much his dad, John Love, was worried about Randy’s future since all his siblings had already made it in life. Things go from comfortable to extremely difficult for Randy when he decided to move from his small hometown to London, and from there the book is a roller coaster of challenges and celebrations.
The title of the book intrigued me into reading and reviewing the book, and in a matter of fact, now compared to the story, Carter couldn’t have chosen a better title. I started this book thinking it would just be a typical story about a womanizer but it was surprisingly more than that. It explored not only romantic relationships but also parenthood, roommates, neighborhood, siblings and boss/employee, in ways that the story became a fun reading experience. The plot is realistic and relatable. I enjoyed the character development in this book, especially when it came to Randy, whose behavior really showed his reckless view of the world. Shay Carter’s use of clear organization, words that were easy to understand and at the same time maintained the efficacy of the book, and lastly, progressive steps make for an enjoyable read. The Author’s use of terms and expressions peculiar to British people was also a nice touch to the story.
Nonetheless, there are some duplicated words, and in one case, it could be found a duplicated sentence, followed with some other minimal grammatical errors, the kind of problems that could be solved with another round of proofreading. Another flaw that I found was that for such a character-driven story, I think many times during Randy`s change of jobs, I couldn’t understand exactly what was his motivation to take that decision. I know he is impulsive, but I think it could be explained better.
The target audience for this book, in my point of view, seems to be young and older women, housewives, mothers, fathers, pet lovers and any person who likes books with plenty of flirts, humor and character-driven plots. But due to sexual content, this book is for adults only.
Generally, I enjoyed the book despite the few problems I mentioned. I suppose I can say that I was captivated by Randy’s charm and confidence, therefore I rate it 3 out of 4 stars.
