Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks by Morton E. Tavel is a lengthy book containing numerous ideas on health and nutrition. It is a must-have for almost everyone. It addresses popular health issues and also offers practical tips on managing them. It is a great tool for reference purposes.
The title of this book is a perfect reflection of its content. It is obvious that much research has been done to produce this book. It must have taken a great deal of work to get the real truth on popular myths on health. It is also clear that the author's intent is to keep readers informed and up-to-date. However, I feel that more topics should have been added. For example, after discussing the issue of weight loss, I was disappointed to find that there was no information on how to gain weight.
The first section gives tips on a wide array of subjects. They include; weight loss, artificial sweeteners, and even painkillers. The next section focuses on widespread myths which are believed by many to be true. These myths are misleading and might cause irreparable damage to one's health. The last section deals with 'cure all' drugs and how to recognize them. I especially love the simple terms used in this book. Unlike many books on health, this book is extremely easy to understand.
The scope of subjects covered in this book is amazing. When I noticed the lengthy chapters and diverse topics, I thought that an in-depth analysis of each topic would be impossible. But I was surprised to find that the author was able to do justice to each and every topic. Also noteworthy is the author's honesty. When discussing solutions that are not yet conclusive, he comes out straight. For instance, when discussing the issue of eating breakfast, he wrote; 'Although still not conclusive, the evidence supporting the health benefits of eating breakfast in the long run continues to mount.'
Worthy of note is the credibility of the information available in this book. The author's years of experience in the medical profession inspires trust. It is refreshing to finally have access to truths on controversial issues such as the consumption of genetically modified foods, use of electronic cigarettes and so on.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was professionally edited. The issues discussed can be useful to those interested in improving their health. However, it might be of more use to adults than to kids.
