The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles is set in Atlanta between 1984 and 1998. It tells the story of a beautiful and ambitious woman, Lucy who was adopted by the MacMiels' from Puerto Rico. On the night of a party hosted by A. J MacMiel to celebrate a new Eye Institute, Lucy MacMiel and Luke Osbourne's lives are brought together by a fatal accident. Already attracted to Lucy and believing she cares about him, Luke Osbourne marries Lucy six months after she was charged with vehicular manslaughter. Their marriage is however one of unrequited love, with Lucy leaving six days into their honeymoon with the excuse of going to defend a client, Evangelist Hower Bain who was charged with statutory rape. Despite finding the Evangelist condescending and insulting, Lucy prefers the long working hours preparing a defence for the Evangelist's rape case, to the comfort of her new home and the company of her husband. When Lucy MacMiel finds she is pregnant, she is determined to remove it but after much pleas and entreaties from her family and her husband, she carries it full term but immediately after giving birth gets back to working on the Hower Bain case. Her relationship with the Evangelist costs her her career and her home; and with the belief that the Evangelist loves her, Lucy moves to an African country, Ghana, to be with him. Luke raises their daughter Jennifer, with the help of Elizabeth MacMiel and Agnes MacMiel, Lucy's younger step-sister and adoptive mother respectively. Luke finds love again with Elizabeth MacMiel and together they raise Luke and Lucy's daughter, Jennifer. When Lucy eventually returns to the United States from Africa, she has missed a great part of her daughter's childhood, and even when Elizabeth reaches out to her, Lucy's guilt and ambition draws her even farther away.

The Spirit of Want is an interesting book with well written plots. The characters are intense and deeply conflicted. The author through his characters portrayed daily human emotions of love, hate, neglect, resentment, greed, ambition, kindness, sacrifice and a desire to be a part of something special, and these make it easy for a reader to relate to. Through out the story, Elizabeth MacMiel, Lucy's half sister provides love, kindness and steadfastness that carefully binds the conflicted family together: their mother Agnes, Luke, Jennifer and even Lucy. I looked forward to a second chance for Lucy but even when she gets and finally accepts it, her life is sadly cut short.

A. J MacMiel makes the perfect protagonist and not Hower Bain. His inability to change even for his family, his greed and selfishness, abusive nature and reluctance to show love and respect to his family breaks his family apart, and like a lot of homes in life, it is the victims that are most affected. I like that at least, Elizabeth, Agnes and Luke eventually found love and happiness.

The Spirit of Want is divided into three parts and 62 chapters with each chapter dedicated to Luke and Lucy. After carefully reading the novel, I noticed no grammatical errors. The plots are well organized and flow very well. The grammar used in the novel is simple, easily understood and not complicated. I will rate The Spirit of Want by William H. Coles, 4 out of 4 stars for its beautiful story and I recommend it to everyone who enjoys a good book.
