Over the last week I read Heartaches by H.M. Irwing, I mention week because it was a fairly quick read. I did not know much about the plot of the book before beginning. Since as much as it is not advised, I do judge a book by its cover as well as the title of the book. There was a lot of shocking moments in the first quarter of the book, which I will not write about in my summary so that it can surprise you as well.

This is the story of Anna Simmons who mentions that she is no the smartest girl and also only has one friend. Recently her stepbrother killed her stepfather, not that her stepfather was the nicest man but this still comes at a shock to have son murder father. Her stepbrother, Brian is just as bad but in a sneaky way as we find out multiple times during the story.

Not long after this Anna is so happy and in love with her new boyfriend, Matt who is one of the hottest in her school. We learn that he wants her to dress in outfits, which are tighter and more revealing than she would like, which as the reader started setting of alarm bells. She is so excited to go to the concert with him though that you push that towards the back of your mind. When she reaches the concert though she meets Matt’s brother Jason who she has never met formally despite having been dating Matt for months. For some reason though the are kissing within the first few minutes of meeting…

Now we get to meet our hurt hero Rafe Brown. He has dealt with a lot in his life from being abused by his father to the secrets he has learned after years of being in the army. He has now been sent home from the Syria war and is living with his aunt. Rafe and Anna meet for the first time when they have to attend a ceremony for her father’s side of the family. Anna is moody and wearing clothing, which are loose and baggy around her. Luckily Rafe is able to find out what is going on in Anna’s life and offer her hope in starting a new chapter in her life.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars because although I did like the book there were parts that I thought there should have been a trigger warning to prepare the reader as to parts of the plot. I definitely would have never thought there would be rape and abuse in this story so I was very shocked by reading it. I hope that the publishers could mention this somewhere on either the back of the book or the cover so that it does not hurt the reader.
