In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All by Eckart Aurelius Hughes is a profoundly well-orchestrated, philosophical writing on the best practices to achieving inner peace. Hughes begins this in-depth work with an open letter of love, setting the tone for a loving approach to self-examination.

To help the reader achieve the best possible understanding of the principles or philosophies described in this book, Hughes first lays the groundwork of explaining how we are more than this one, current version of ourselves, as well as how the “true self” is spiritually connected to every other “true self” existing during this and all spacetime. Hughes encourages the reader to consider that those other “true selves” are also experiencing the same struggles. One such struggle is how we are all on a kind of “addiction spectrum”, how the “false or lower self” is never satiated.

Hughes lays those best practices out in a clear and concise format for easy consumption. There is a definitive list of several suggestions designed to help the “true self” on the journey to “inner peace (a.k.a. self-discipline).” This list covers many concepts, including my personal favorite, regarding discomfort. If you are asking yourself what discomfort has to do with “inner peace,” I recommend that you get your copy of “In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All today.

In my reading of this book, I learned a few new things, including my introduction to Voltairine de Cleyre, an American anarchist, feminist, writer and public speaker who taught herself to read and write. Which is important as it lends itself to a specific point made by Hughes. In that, we can choose most things in our lives. She made the choice to teach herself to read—self discipline.

I really enjoyed this book, as it affirmed many ideas or thoughts that I have had. Specifically regarding honesty, letting go, and living in the present. This book has been professionally and expertly edited, and there is nothing that I would change about this book. I feel very confident in rating this book 5 out of 5 stars and would highly recommend it to all people, but especially those who seek to connect with their “true or higher selves.”
