[Following is a volunteer review of "The Buchanan Bastard" by Dedra L. Stevenson.]
In February 1977, during the lively Mardi Gras festivities in New Orleans, Laura raced back to her suite at Chateau Versailles, where she found this horrific scene. After a night filled with tedious social interactions, nothing prepared her for what she found as she entered her room. She found her husband, Brian, in bed alongside a strange woman, and both of them were riddled with bullet wounds and dead. This gruesome scene left Laura shocked and scared, and she clutched a still-warm gun she found. The police break in and, on seeing her with the gun, arrest her immediately. All these trouble Laura as she tries to understand the nightmare that has just happened to her. What could have resulted in such a grim discovery, and how is Laura to clear her name of suspicion? Who is the strange woman in bed with Brian?
This book is an exciting and awesome read full of surprises and emotional twists that keep you on the edge throughout. The storytelling is heavily descriptive and engaging, and this will make readers feel the emotion of the scenes and feel the processes going in the characters’ heads. The author's depiction of the characters and their emotions was exceptional, from the sadness of Laura realizing the trouble she was to the tension-filled urgency as Larry rushes to New Orleans. The shifting point of view also increases the quality. Coral stood out to me, especially because of how she cared for her children and took care of them even in tough circumstances. This storyline contains suspense, and the lives of the characters are entangled in an unprecedented way. It is enjoyable and perfect.
I can’t find anything about this novel that I would consider to be dislikeable, and all in all, this is one satisfying read from beginning to end. The editing is thorough and makes the story brilliant, and there are no errors. The biggest strengths are the complex structure and the detailed descriptions of scenes. The Buchanan Bastard by Dedra L. Stevenson gets a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because of all the reasons listed above. I recommend it to anyone who wants an enthralling and mystery-themed novel.
