Eckhart Aurelius Hughes' book, In It Together, asks why there are starving children in the world when there seems to be an abundance of food that will be enough for everyone. Instead, there are those who have an abundance of food, enough to waste, and there are those who lack it so much so that they are severely malnourished, especially children. Why is it that we cannot share?

Every point the author made all boiled down to this emotion, love. In one of the chapters, Eckhart discussed how we can free our spirit and manifest love. Spiritual liberation can be likened to letting go. Compared to the general thought that letting go of something is more difficult than holding on to it, the philosophical idea in this book suggests that clinging to something is even more difficult than letting it go. 'Letting go' is described as not requiring any effort because it means not to hold on. But to cling to something requires a lot of effort on our part. Truly, when we think about this explanation, we will find some truth in it. So, how does spiritual liberation help us manifest love?

One of the worst things people can do is to lie to themselves. So trying to be someone you are not can be tiring. There's nothing as liberating as being true to yourself. Eckhart had this intriguing idea that using the word 'try' in doing something we can or cannot do is a way of deceiving ourselves. It is ridiculous to try to do something we know we cannot do. An example, as given in the book, is trying to change the weather when you know that you can't do that. The other form of 'try' is trying to do something we can do. We must understand that there's a fine line between what we can and cannot do, and being honest with ourselves about these things can be liberating.

I had a good reading experience as the author gradually took me step by step while trying to help me understand. My experience was one new revelation after another, and I liked that. Hence, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was worth my time. It was finely edited, which aided my proper understanding of the author's ideas. There's nothing negative for me to state about this book. I recommend it to those who want to understand love.
