The American Visa by Shefqet Meko is a thrilling tale that tells us about the story of Artan Pojani. Artan Pojani is an Albanian living in a country that is filled with hope for a better future after the fall of communism. Artan is a beekeeper and a former mathematics teacher. He has the dream of one day visiting the United States with his family as a tourist. While others are emigrating in several ways, both legal and illegal, Artan decides to stay back and build his family, as well as provide value to his community. He finds success as a beekeeper and has a happy family. When his request for a tourist visa is denied, it shakes his very core, as that has always been his lifelong dream. In the aftermath of this rejection, he makes a new friend, Pandi Pilaha, an Albanian American resident in the United States. Their friendship blossoms, and they both help each other out. His quest to right the wrongs takes him on a journey to the United States to clear his name and ensure that justice is done.

The American Visa is a tale of hope, the fight for freedom, the fight against corruption, and commitment to one's values and dreams. It's a story that tells us of the depth of corruption in a society that is coming out of communism. The author captures the mood in Albania after the fall of communism, the hope of the people for something better, as well as the effect of journalism. His ability to capture the struggles of the average Albanian and pass them across to the readers through his writing is truly commendable.

My favorite character in the book is Artan Pojani. His commitment to his dream, despite the disappointment, is commendable. He decided that he did not want to emigrate as others were but instead wanted to stay back and develop his community, and even after he had gone to the United States, he concluded that while he loved America, he preferred to go back to his homeland. He saw an Albania that was prosperous, one where things were done right and progress was made.

I enjoyed the book, and there was nothing to dislike about the book. The way the lives of the characters were interwoven before they even met was interesting to read. The author aptly captures the disappointment of one who has his dreams shattered despite doing all he was required to do. It was a really good story, as we saw Artan's journey from disappointment to hope. The book was impeccably edited, and I must also commend the author for such a wonderful book.

I rate the book a good 4 out of 5 stars. It didn't get a complete score because I was sad with the way Artan's story ended. The author reveals the detrimental impact of a corrupt society on one's dreams, emphasizing the power of determination and commitment to justice, freedom, and personal values. It illustrates how hope can persist even in seemingly hopeless situations. I encourage everyone longing for a society that values freedom and fairness, where the dreams of individuals are not stifled by the avarice of a privileged few, to read this book.

One's dreams failing is one thing, but failing over an injustice takes the pain to a whole new level. I'd love to know how things went for Artan.
