Review of Syrup Sandwiches
It might be said that a child born black, to an absentee father, and in poverty during the author's childhood days was destined for a difficult life. However, the author overcame all odds, forging a successful career in the Navy, building a wonderful family, and leading a generally fulfilling life. It's hard to believe that he faced racism, bullying, family lack, and, above all, the emptiness of growing up without a father — but he did! "Syrup Sandwiches" by Anthony Owens is the author's memoir, spanning from his childhood to his old age, chronicling all the hardships and struggles he endured and how he found his breakthrough.
This is an incredibly encouraging book, and I resonated with it deeply. I've never felt more uplifted than after closing the last page of this book. While my situation and circumstances may differ slightly, I could relate to many aspects of the author's struggles and overall life. I couldn't agree more when the author's mother told him, “Quitting is easy. Don’t take the easy way out." No one should settle for less or quit; we should give it our all until we make it. The author's life is a testament that there is always light at the end of the tunnel if we search for it.
A standout feature in the book is the author's emphasis on how the lack of a father figure in children's lives could adversely affect their well-being. The author details his insecurities and the problems he faced growing up without a father or anyone who could step into that role. Many times, he wished for a grown-up man to advise him on areas he found challenging and to confide in. I think this serves as a resounding reminder to deadbeat and absentee dads to be there for their children and advice to mothers not to hide their children from their fathers, even if they separate. It is also a call to men to be the good role models and influences that the children around them look up to.
This is an enjoyable book that I highly recommend, and I award it 5 out of 5 stars. I found nothing to dislike about the book.
