Review of In It Together
In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes is an enlightening book that challenges readers to focus on the positive force of love in their lives. The book begins with an exploration of the common struggles faced by people regardless of political affiliation, wealth, education, and other categories that usually separate us into distinct interest groups. The common struggle is expressed as the human condition. People tend to be dissatisfied with their lives. This may be due to never-ending goals. For the goal-oriented person, once a goal is achieved, then a new goal is set. People are constantly striving to achieve the next goal and are never satisfied. For example, the goals could be work-related promotions, a higher salary, or a bigger house. People also tend to be dissatisfied when they feel that the grass is always greener somewhere else. They strive to achieve something they envy about another person or position. Once achieved, they realize they were disillusioned because it is not what they expected it to be, so they look for the next greener pasture.
Once Hughes identified these obstacles that we may be creating for ourselves, he proposed some suggestions for letting go of these ideas and freeing ourselves from these inner battles we are creating that hold us back. He referred to letting go as “Spiritual Liberation.” The goal of his eleven suggestions is inner peace. Achieving inner peace will result in living a happier and more fulfilling life. His suggestions require self-discipline and patience in changing the way you think. Without realizing it, we may have developed a pattern of thought and actions that have been holding us back and adding stress to our lives. By examining our behavior and self-talk and implementing his suggestions, we can work to escape the prisons we may have created for ourselves. For example, you may have been clinging to your comfort zone and negative self-talk for so long that you don’t realize the damage it may have done to the real you that strives for inner peace and love.
This book was a real eye-opener for me. It begins with a discussion about world problems, including childhood hunger and starvation. I was not sure at first how this related to the concept of being in it together. However, as the book progressed, the author explained that we are not focused on these world problems because we are focused on ourselves. By standing in our own way and holding ourselves back, we are unable to focus on these world problems. The author’s discussions about finding the real you are fascinating because they strip away the categories that most people feel define who they are. However, you are not defined by your job or your family. You are not defined by where you live or what you look like. When you look beneath all these things and find the real you, you can see that we have more in common with each other than we realize.
I appreciated the eleven suggestions provided by the author and found them to be the most memorable part of the book. Each of the eleven suggestions provides background on the reason he is suggesting this change and exactly how incorporating the suggestion will benefit your life. If you do not feel like a particular suggestion applies to you, then you can move on to the next one. I found each of the eleven suggestions to be relevant to my life. I look forward to making a conscious effort to address these issues that may be negatively impacting my outlook on life. In addition to the eleven suggestions, I found the book to be incredibly supportive and uplifting. He referenced past mistakes that we should let go of and move on from. Holding onto negativity does not benefit anyone. His acknowledgment that we all make mistakes was refreshing. Additionally, I felt as though I received a pep talk in many of the sections. The author’s positive and encouraging attitude inspired me to accept myself with all of my flaws and move forward more positively. There was nothing that I disliked about the book.
This is an exceptionally well-edited book without any errors. I found it to be inspiring in its philosophical approach and in its practical suggestions for readers to improve their lives. I give it a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. It is thought-provoking and relatable, so I would not rate it any less than a perfect score. I recommend the book to readers interested in identifying areas in their lives where they may be holding themselves back. I also recommend it to readers looking for practical suggestions to improve their lives and find inner peace.
