This is a story about Ghoulem Berrah, who grew up in Algeria back when it was colonized by France. He works hard in school, scores top grades in all his subjects, and ends up moving to France to further his studies. I enrolled him in medical school, and there he started his political activism journey. He finds friends from different countries, and they work together to protect their home countries from foreigners. His activism journey creates great opportunities as he gets to meet many top officials and government leaders. He later moves to the US, where he studies at Indiana University and graduates with a doctorate. He then accepted a professorial position at Yale University, where he worked for a while. Later, he quits his job to continue with his acts of service to the people and ends up landing a role as the diplomatic advisor to President Houphuët of Coté d'Ivoire. I like that the author describes everything in detail. It helps the reader understand every situation he describes better. I also love how he portrays his mother as an amazing woman who had a deep regard for education. It makes her lovable. It is amazing how the author is honest throughout the memoir. For instance, when he talks about how they learned more about the French culture in school than that of their home country, Algeria, It is also nice how the author includes pictures to give the reader a clear visual of what he is talking about. It is easier to follow the story when you see the picture of the individual he is describing. I liked everything about this memoir. The author vividly describes everything, thus answering any questions the reader may have. Also, the detailed description of every situation helps the reader visualize it and be more involved. The writer also has a way of invoking emotion in the reader, for instance, in a sad situation. I rate this book 5 out of 5. I did not find anything wrong with the book. The editing is flawless, and the writing is easy to read. The whole story is interesting and flows effortlessly. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read memoirs about African heroes. This book takes you through the author’s journey from his childhood to when he became an activist. It also describes all the challenges he experienced along the way. I guarantee you will love this book.
