[Following is a volunteer review of "Terms of Service" by Craig W. Stanfill.]
Events that took place in the past are considered history. What name can we use to refer to events that we can only prognosticate will occur in the future? Terms of Service is the name I accord such events. Craig W. Stanfill obtained his PhD in artificial intelligence in 1983. Terms of Service is Craig's work in which he takes the readers deep into the future when artificial intelligences (AIs) will play almost the same roles as human beings.
The narrative revolves around Kim, who works as a trainer of the AIs. He spends most of his time doing his work, which not only entails training the AIs but also creating them. Sometimes, Kim finds time to be with his allies, who are mainly his former classmates. One day, Kim went cycling with his friend, Shan, and they ended up going against the company's rules. Kim is summoned to appear before the director to face charges for his disobedience. The director presents two choices to Kim, from which he has to choose one. Kim spends the rest of his life remorseful for the choice he made. Which choices were presented to Kim? Which choice did he make, and how does he compensate for that choice? The answers are in this terrific work.
I liked several aspects of this book. Firstly, the setting of the narrative quite astonished me. My decoder for this was the author's creativity and vast knowledge. The AIs almost played better roles than the human characters. I confess that my favorite character was Kimberly, the artificial intelligence that was created by Kim. Its conversations with Kim were amazing. Secondly, I liked the degree of civilization portrayed in the book. The story is narrated at a time when men and women are equal. The same pronouns are used regardless of the gender. Racism and individualism have also been so suppressed that they almost do not exist. The fact that the book was divided into parts and chapters with titles made my reading quite easy.
I did not find anything to dislike in this work.
When you get an opportunity to read this book, you are surely going to agree with my full rating of it. I confidently accord it a rating of five out of five stars. The editor did superb work, as I did not manage to spot anything I could call an error. The editor rendered the book free of any typographical or grammatical errors.
Everyone who likes science fiction books will find this book a terrific read. Someone who has not read a science fiction book because she fears finding them boring may begin with this book. The pdf version of the book has 332 pages, but I assure you that you will wish that he could have written more pages.
