Review of Mr. McTavish Goes to the Library
The bond between humans and their pets has been a very admirable topic since immemorial. Humans care for their pets; in return, the pets give them company and sometimes protection. We see that relationship in Mr. McTavish Goes to the Library by Bon Kay. Mr. McTavish is Gma's pet dog. He speaks of her with so much admiration and love. Gma and he appear to have been invited to an event in the library; however, he had yet to learn where they were going at the time.
As they begin their journey, Mr. McTavish never fails to let the audience know his feelings as they emanate, starting with how Gma tied his seatbelt and placed him on an elevated surface, which allowed him to see all the cars and passersby on the road. When they finally arrived, he mentioned the cap that Gma puts on his head, which has grown on him, and the lady who comes to greet them. Next, we would learn the reason behind the library visit. This book views life for a day from a dog's perspective. It was a concise but interesting book.
Mr. McTavish is quite an interesting character. What struck me was his gratitude, love, and admiration for his owner; it made me ponder whether my dog, if given a chance, could speak about me in like manner. Apart from the obvious admiration here, children stand to gain a lot from reading this book. The lessons they stand to gain are worthwhile. Lessons like obedience, gratitude, and kindness to others can be obtained from reading this book. This kindness and eagerness to help we saw in Gma through the donation she made to the library taught that we should help others within our means. I also appreciated the illustrations, which would help children understand and flow better with this book. The book was written from Mr. McTavish's perspective and gave us an introspect into what pets might think about their owners and society.
There was nothing I disliked about this book. The few points were spread out and easy for children and other readers to grasp. The book was exceptionally well edited, as I did not encounter a single error while reading through it. The concise nature of this book is well appreciated, as young children could easily pick it up and get a sense of accomplishment when they finish it. The author mentions that this book is the second in a series, but it is perfectly suited as a standalone.
I rate Mr. McTavish Goes to the Library by Bon Kay 5 out of 5 stars for its concise but interesting plot, fascinating pictures, and impeccable editing. I recommend this book to children between the ages of 3 and 10.
