Review by Rat de bibliotheque1 of In It Together: The Beautiful Struggle Uniting Us All
In It Together is a book written by Eckhart Aurelius Hughes. It is a book that explores the notion of consciousness and aims to explain how important it is. The author gives definitions and clear examples of what consciousness is. He explains how each one of us can reach true happiness by understanding our consciousness, our true self. This is a philosophical book about the human condition. We, as human beings, all suffer. The book poses questions such as what constitutes our common struggles, and how to find spirituality. This book strives at making us think about our lives so that we can reach true spirituality.
The book taught me that to find peace, we all need to experience consciousness. Understanding our consciousness will enable us to truly love. It reminded me that we should all accept our struggles and make the right choices. This is an empowering message and therefore an inspiring message to us all. Even if most people know what is right in life, they often fail to make the correct choices because they do not use self-discipline. It gave me the knowledge and reassurance that in life, we can all find true happiness if we decide to apply self-discipline in our daily lives.
The author writes in a direct style about philosophical ideas and makes the reader understand them by giving clear and simple examples. The examples make the reader understand concepts which can be a little difficult to understand. Philosophy is complex and acknowledged philosophers such as Camus, Descartes and Aristotle have written extensively about consciousness. By giving examples the reader can relate to, the author makes the reader realize how we can all find our true selves. The style is direct and fluent, yet it remains simple. Chapters sometimes start with a question so as to engage the reader immediately. Some chapters will start with a clear title. When a question is posed, the author will direct the reader to think about the answer. The author refers to philosophers and physicists. He gives some quotes in order to emphasize his own message.
I enjoyed the book. It is a book that makes you think and I have always enjoyed philosophy. In making you think about your own life, it conveys the powerful message to improve yourself by reaching spirituality. The ending was powerful and I especially liked the way the author addressed the reader directly. It made you feel you had a real connection with the author. I recommend this book to readers who enjoy philosophy and psychology. I also recommend it to people who are searching for their true selves. It is a book that will certainly make you reflect on your life but also on the world. It should help you become more empathic towards yourself and others. I would recommend reading it slowly as it requires concentration but it will be worth your while. It will make you feel enlightened and motivated by the end of it.
The author could have included more concrete examples of everyday life in the chapter on evil, as I found this chapter interesting but challenging. However, this is just a minor suggestion as there is nothing I disliked about the book. I rate this book four out of four stars.
