[Following is a volunteer review of "Unicorns Know Magic" by Charles Adkins.]
The story in Unicorns Know Magic by Charles T. Adkins tells how four awesome, friendly, and extremely helpful unicorns moved in next door one day to the house of a little girl and boy. The unicorns knew magic, and they possessed terrific gifts too. There was one who could juggle several balls at once and another who could roller skate. Another could stand on her head all day, and another could sing and play the guitar. However, their greatest strength was their ability to fly! Through this unique ability, the children and unicorns were able to go on some breathtaking adventures around the world. The unicorns seem too good to be true. Will they continue living next door?
The main thing that stands out in this book is the illustrations. Throughout the book, there are beautiful, colourful, and large images that will engage young minds. Also, I liked the idea of magic in the story, as it teaches children that anything is possible.
There is not much to dislike about the book. It is reasonably edited and contains a wonderfully well-narrated story, supplemented with beautiful illustrations that children will enjoy. However, I would only suggest that the writing or text be more prominent. The author can afford to enlarge it and make it more noticeable because there is not much text in the book. Because the font is so tiny, the writing is now in the shadow of the illustrations. Due to their size and colour, the illustrations are fantastically vivid and a great complement to the text, but they, unfortunately, overshadow it.
I recommend this book for children between the ages of zero and five. Younger readers should be read and narrated to by an adult.
The book deserves four out of four stars because it will be an excellent resource for children.
