Review of You, This Is Me...OVER?!

[Following is a volunteer review of "You, This Is Me...OVER?!" by Clinton Beaudel Dooley.]
You, This is Me ... OVER?! by Clinton Beaudel Dooley is an inspiring story of one man’s journey as a Green Beret through his service in the military to recognizing and coping with mental health challenges and recovery. Through poetry and narrative, Mr. Dooley outlines what he learned along the way with the hope of helping others with their struggles, both military and civilians alike.
I especially liked the flow of the book from the author’s initial mental health struggles to self-awareness and recovery, using a variety of writing styles. Poems such as ‘When The Music Finally Stops’ and ‘Walking With The Devil’ (with its creative use of caps, bold text, and different fonts) are particularly insightful and well-written. The expressions of anger, hatred, and confusion are emotionally charged, and caused me to examine my own thoughts and struggles at the same time.
My only dislike is that some of the love poetry such as ‘My Queen’ and ‘My Muse, My Music’ seem rather cliche. However, the importance of Mr. Dooley’s marriage and relationship with his wife does fit appropriately into the context of the book, and is better represented in narratives such as ‘Re-Integration’.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars for its sincere expression of emotion that allows the reader to follow Mr. Dooley’s journey, cheer him on to self-acceptance, and gain valuable insight along the way.
I recommend this book to anyone looking for inspiration and understanding of mental illness, or anyone struggling with self-awareness. This book would be particularly helpful for a caregiver to someone struggling with a newly diagnosed mental illness. The knowledge and encouragement that Mr. Dooley offers would bring comfort and acceptance to both patient and caregiver.
