Dragons, royalty, and wizards oh my! The Dream Map by Jason Luthor has everything a fantasy reader loves! This is an original book that captures your attention all the way from the first sentence to the very last sentence. This is a great book for readers of all ages, young to old.
Maximus Douglas is a young man, who is seventeen years old and is an outcast in his hometown of Waxahachie, Texas. He only has one real friend, Heidi Trevino, who he spends most of his time with when he is not at the local bookstore immersing himself into the books. One day he meets a man who is looking for "maps of places that don't exist" at the bookstore. A couple days later he meets this man again when he goes with Heidi and her dad to her dad's work where they do experiments. When Max is there something goes wrong with one of the experiment and he is transported to a foreign place, LaGuna. This place is like the old days that you read about with knights and royalty and, of course, wars. When he is there, he meets Princess Kate and her family and he learns of a sorcerer that is trying to take over their world and is killing all their people. Max enlists his help, even though he doesn't think that he can be of much help to them, especially when he hears that they need to enlist the help of dragons. Can the dragons help the people kill the sorcerer? Can Max magically become brave and help save the people? Will they survive or go down fighting?
I loved the originality of this book. It took a lot of different aspects of fantasy writing and put them all together in a new fun way that captivates the reader. I also really liked that this was an easy to read book that you can have your children read.
The only thing I did not like about the book was that, unfortunately, Max could not be in two places at one time. I felt bad for his parents missing him, but I also wanted Max to be able to stay in the one place that he actually fit in and mattered to people other than his family and Heidi. This was my own little personal gripe, because I want everyone to be happy but nothing against the book!
I would give The Dream Map a 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to my students, but also to my friends and family. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes fantasies and other worldly books.
