Shitolian is a poetry book written by O Persaud. This poetry book covers various themes like racism, gun control bill, weather, history, love, God and a lot more. The book is divided into five sections, with each section containing various poems that are related by theme. The five sections had their titles, which were written boldly on a page before the start of the section. The titles of the chapters are shitolian, the creator, the colony, and punctuation. Each section has up to fifteen poems in all.

We as humans tend to relate to things base on what we witness in our environment. The author compiled some of his experience in life and how it relates to others. Poems like “Black and white drinking fountain” is a wake-up call to Americans to understand that both black and white people come from the same source and there should be no room for preferential treatment. Gun control talked about how the congress members were slow in taking a stand, which will eventually lead to an innocent bystander getting hit.

I enjoy reading the poems on punctuation as the author took them to another level. He revealed details about the function of each punctuation while stating his concerns, likes and dislikes about them. This was unique and well delivered by the author. The author also used some figures of speech to make his poem flow well. He made use of rhymes in some of his poems to create some harmonic rhythms in the mind of the reader. All the poems provided in this book were filled with emotions and thought-provoking. The usage of the words in each verse of the poems gives a deep meaning to them. My favourite poems were the ones about “colon”. The author refers to the “colon” as an ass because no one knows where it belongs, as it needs more explanation. I felt this is true about the colon. I wonder this myself about that punctuation. All these made me enjoy this book.

The author used a writing style that is complicated to understand. This affected my reading speed, as I had to go over some poems over again to get the theme and a better understanding. This is the only thing I dislike about the book. Nevertheless, this did not stop me from enjoying this book.

The book was professionally edited with just an error noticed. Therefore, due to the above reasons, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I will be recommending this book to lovers of poems with rugged themes and profanity. The book contains some profanity.
