Kalayla by Jeannie Nicholas is a book that centers on racism, family, and friendship. This book highlights the stories of three women and the hardship they faced. Maureen, who married a black man, was disowned and abandoned by her family. Lena, who had an abusive husband, that hurt her both physically and emotionally. Maureen's daughter, Kalayla, was a lot to handle. She was not like every regular kid. At a very young age, Kalayla had gone through so much than most people have had.

Kalayla had so many questions about her family. It was heartbreaking to see a young child get hurt a couple of times. Despite her faults, she had people who surrounded her with love. With time, things were starting to get better for everyone. When Maureen began to forget all about her past, it came back to haunt her. Will she be able to forgive those who hurt her and move forward? What terrible secret has Lena been keeping all her life?

The positive aspect of this book is the way every character played a part in healing one another. Even though they were all broken, they still found a way to find love and hope. This novel brings hope to those that are struggling. It is a heartwarming story. When reading this book, I was glad to see that all wounds were starting to heal. There were so many times I got emotional in this book. I appreciate the writer's use of humor in this story. There was never a dull moment when reading Kalayla.

I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars because there was nothing I disliked about the book. It is a heartfelt story that I connected with deeply. There were love, reunion, and re-acquaintance in this story. I felt every emotion when reading this book. I appreciate the fact that it was something I could relate to, as no family is perfect. No character seemed out of place, as each one of them had a role to play. It is a book that brings joy and warmth into people's hearts. It was exceptionally edited.

I would recommend this book to people that are interested in other fiction. There were words of profanity, which may be sensitive to some readers. It is a captivating story. I thought this book was going to be like every family story, but this is different. This novel talks about families that have been broken and hurt but later found love. It is a book that I can read over and over. It is simply a must-read.
