I am setting out to write my first novel. Here's the thing: I am going somewhat blindly along with this process and would appreciate some sort of guidance or direction.

What is the best "how to" guide that you have found for outlining and writing a novel? I can't wait to hear some ideas!!!!

The first thought that came to mind was the quote from W.Somerset Maugham: "There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are." So whatever you are doing, or choose to do, relax and remember that the important thing is that you *are* writing!

But you're not the only one to want some guidance along the way; I'll be checking to see what other answers arrive, too. My recommendation is an older book, but one that I found helpful: Telling Lies for Fun and Profit, by Lawrence Block.
