We are Voulhire: The Fires of Virko by Matthew Tysz is a book about war, politics, and power. A transition was happening in an industrial city. The lord of this city had just given power to others leaving his son with nothing to inherit. This lord had worked hard to make his city the most progressive in their region. The city became rich. His son had earlier shown promise of becoming a good ruler, but he changed into a follower of darkness. Because of the love the lord had for the city and his son he thought it better to leave power to the right ruler and have his house and son cleansed of the dark powers. The son did not take it kindly and plotted against it. This plunged the city into chaos. Meanwhile, there was a boy from a different town traveling to this city in search of iron for his company. Together with his friends he got caught up in the city’s chaos.

Violence is one of the most visible themes in this story. Different characters in the story fought for different reasons, but the most common is to gain power. The young lord of the city fought to inherit his father’s crown. He used demons and other dark strategies to achieve his target. The head of the church was murdered and his position taken. This violence is what I liked most.

I liked the city of Virko as described by the author. The city has a hard working and busy population. It is the heart of their region’s industry. I liked how the author described the nobles and laborers of this city. The geographical position of this city and its environment is also well-described. The ruling class and the rest of the citizens are likable. Their spiritual practices are also talked about by the author.

This story is also a lesson about servant leadership. The lord of the city was an excellent leader who spearheaded the development of his city. He was patriotic. The city grew into an economic giant under his leadership. The other leaders after him cared only about their self-interests. This brought war and conflict.

I like everything in this book. It is edited professionally. It has a good plot, and it flows well. It is entertaining and educating. . I rate it four out of four stars. I recommend it to those interested in fiction. It is not suitable for very young readers because of the violence.
