Signs in the Rearview Mirror is a personal account of a toxic relationship that Kelly Smith was involved in. Kelly takes the reader through a roller coaster of childhood trauma, heartbreak, suffering, and finally recovery. Connecting the dots from her childhood, Kelly takes accountability of her inner demons. She allows the reader to witness the process of her journey by breaking out of a toxic relationship and ultimately healing in the aftermath.

What drew me into this book was how I could relate easily to Kelly and her struggles. Certain intervals throughout this book made me emotional. I was able to experience empathy towards Kelly through her struggle to break away despite apparent signs that she should leave. She explained her thought process in clear detail. Anyone else who has experienced a toxic relationship identifies the emotions and feelings she dealt with are painful and not easy to overcome. What I liked the most about Signs in the Rearview Mirror was her brutal honesty with herself and the reader about the situations she was in. Her emotions and feelings were unfiltered.

Nothing stands out to me in this book that would cause me to intensely dislike any aspects. The accounts of violence and abuse might be triggering to some readers, but I believe it was necessary to deliver the punch the book needed to be eye-opening and impactful. In this regard, I believe every memory served a purpose since Kelly connected it back to her older self. This explanation presented better insight as to why she behaved the way she did.

I would recommend this book to any adult or teenager. It would be beneficial to those suffering in a toxic relationship. Additionally, this book would be helpful to people who have not experienced a toxic relationship so that they will be capable of pointing out red flags from an early stage. This book would appeal to those who are seeking help or advice in a toxic relationship. I would not recommend this book to children since it contains adult themes and instances of profanity.

My rating of Signs in the Rearview Mirror is 4 out of 4 stars. The reason I am giving this score is that the story is open and raw, producing a lasting impact. As someone who has also suffered from toxic relationships, it is vital to not have a victim mentality and look inward. Kelly took the reader through that battle and highlighted the importance of recognizing her own toxic traits when conquering the cycle of being involved in these relationships. The narration was crisp and clean, making the audible version easy to follow along with. This book represents a realistic approach to toxic relationships and is insightful for any reader, regardless of their situation.
