[Following is a volunteer review of "In Pursuit of The Pale Prince" by Mark Wallace.]
In Pursuit of The Pale Prince by Mark Wallace is about a 12 year old boy, Arestus and his friends. He must deliver the lost crown of Ellesund to the Pale Prince to prevent a war between the Northern Kingdoms and Southwen. On his journey Arestus faces bandits, wolves, and must travel through the Western Wastes, a very dangerous land; fortunately he makes a few friends along the way, Cirin and Hendelf. The trio faces many dangers on their way to see the Pale Prince, especially when traveling through the Western Wastes and its wolves. When they arrive the Prince must decide whether to fight or surrender. Arestus must decide if he has a place in the battle or to go his own way.
I really liked the characters in the story. Arestus is young with an old soul and is very wise for his age. Hendelf is a little bit of a joker but is experienced and takes difficult situations seriously. Cirin is an old sailor. His background is slowly revealed as the story progresses, although there’s much more to him than meets the eye. He is an experienced fighter and is at Arestus's side through the whole journey. I found myself wanting to know more about his background. By the end of the story they had developed a strong bond.
In Pursuit of The Pale Prince is a great story. I always wanted to know what happened next. The characters were well developed and had strong personalities. The author did a great job describing the characters and the lands around them. I had no trouble imagining the different landscapes in my head.
The only criticism I have for the book is that at the end it was a bit predictable. I kept waiting for a big twist or for the story to go in a different direction but it never happened. Despite this it did not take away from the story at all and I loved every second of it. It was well told and kept me interested.
I rate In Pursuit of The Pale Prince 4 out of 4 stars. It was an excellent story and I would love to read a sequel. I did not notice any spelling or grammar mistakes. There were no instances of profanity or inappropriate scenes. Younger kids might not like this because of the fighting scenes, they are not gory, but it still might bother them. I would recommend this to anyone else.
