[Following is a volunteer review of "Strong Heart" by Charlie Sheldon.]
Strong Heart by Charlie Sheldon is set in Seattle Washington and the wilderness of Olympic Peninsula Park. It follows a 13-year-old girl Sarah, who is suddenly and without warning dropped off at her grandfather Tom's, who didn't know of her existence. With the unexpected arrival of his granddaughter, Tom and his native American friends Myra and William must decide whether to take Sarah on a camping trip to the Olympic Peninsula Park to return an artifact to Tom's grandfather Bob-Bob's burial site. They thought it may be a mistake to take her but didn't want to cancel the trip, so ultimately decided to take her with them.
While on the trip Sarah tells the threesome that she saw a bear and sketches it in her sketch pad. Tom doesn't believe she saw the bear because it didn't look like any regular bear. It had a short face and long arms. Myra tells Tom that there is a bear that looks like the sketch but the last of them died 12 thousand years ago.
Sarah along with the artifact disappeared during the camping trip. Sarah was missing for eight days and when they finally find her she tells them a vivid story of what happened while she was gone. Tom, Myra, and William don't know what to make of the peculiar story. It is only after they return with a fifth person Sergei, a scientist, to find the lost artifact that the story Sarah told starts to make sense.
There is a mixture of science, mysticism and human bonds that make this book charming. Sarah is a young girl who shows the other characters in the book the true magic, history, and legend of the Olympic Peninsula Park.
What I liked most about this book is that it shows that legend and science can come together to make sense of events. What I disliked the most was when Sarah was telling the story of what happened when she was missing, it got a bit long and drawn out. I found myself wanting that part to move along.
This book will appeal to readers who love fantasy and mystical charm. I gave this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was enjoyable and kept me wanting more. I didn't find any errors and the book was exceptionally edited. I look forward to reading the next book in this series adrift.
