[Following is a volunteer review of "A Police Action" by A. A. Freda.]
A Police Action by A. A. Freda is centered on the life of James Coppi, an American citizen who joins the military to fight in the Vietnam war. Surprisingly, he only does this to prove to himself that he is not a coward. Being young, he is very enthusiastic about life and is excited to see what lies ahead. One day, while out with his friends for a drink, he meets a hooker. Samantha is a beautiful lady whose life is in pieces and is thus forced to engage in prostitution to make ends meet.
Coppi falls in love with her at first sight. In an effort to turn her life around, he offers to take care of her financial needs. However, despite this, he’s not ready to commit to her since the outcome of the war is uncertain and he doesn’t wish to give her false hopes. Moreover, he wishes to figure out his life and find his true purpose. Being patient and considerate, Samantha gives him time to get his life together and make the right choice which he does. In the end, he changes his mind and ends up marrying her.
From the story, we see a number of themes portrayed. From effects of war and conflict to love and marriage, the author does an amazing job highlighting each. Coppi loses many of his friends in the battlefield which breaks him mentally and emotionally. Despite this, he remains strong and determined, surviving till the end of his service. Ironically, he finds out that he isn’t afraid of death but is instead scared to face the reality of life. This realization is crucial in determining his final decision to marry Samantha.
The book is well presented and contains minimal spelling and grammatical errors. Moreover, it is filled with action and adventure. The author has a way of keeping it simple yet very entertaining. The plot has a lot of twists and is very unpredictable. Based on the above, I rate the book 4 out of 4 stars.
In conclusion ,the book would be most suitable for teenagers and adults. It aims to show the struggles we all face in our day to day lives. However, rather than sitting back and cowering from them, we are supposed to be willing and determined to face them. Besides, It shows how a small push from those around us can go a long way to help us overcome the challenges.
