The Dark Web Murders
Author: Brian O'Hare

The dark web is the perfect place for the world's underground players to find a myriad of dark activities. Any person with the right masked IP and the know-how can buy and sell illicit materials, hire a hit man, or even trade in human trafficking; however, it might take someone truly deranged to use the dark web as the place to boast on a blog about that day's fresh kill.

In The Dark Web Murders, Brian O'Hare takes the reader on a journey of justice that begins with the murder of one of Northern Ireland's most notorious judges. As Detective Chief Inspector Sheehan and his team race towards finding out who killed Judge Neeson, more murders with the same apparent motive crop up throughout the district. When dark secrets from the Judge's life are uncovered, the whole team is pushed to investigate a shadowed world they don't understand. Unable to find connections between the murders and running out of time, Sergeant Detective Stewart, the Chief's partner, turns to the only place that might help them: the dark web. What she finds there not only shocks her and the team but could also lead them all to the dark path of the killer.

As an avid reader of mystery and crime novels, there were many things that I found enjoyable about The Dark Web Murders. First, the writing style was very blunt and to the point, leaving out the excess fluff in favor of a more direct depiction of the murders and subsequent investigation. Second, the different avenues that the story explored, from the ideas of vengeance and justification, to the use of the dark web today, were coherent and led the story to an interesting and new perspective. Finally and particularly, I enjoyed the mystery and misdirection that Brian O'Hare used all the way to the end. The flow of the plot did an excellent job at baiting the reader with suspects throughout, but not giving the game away until the correct moment.

While Brian O'Hare did a fantastic job at spinning a tale of mystery and darkness, there were quite a few grammatical and punctuation errors. Due to this reason, I am rating this book three stars out of four. The story itself was an exciting page-turner, but it did not appear to be fully and professionally edited. This minor flaw was truly the only negative aspect that I could find, as the story had me sucked in from the very first page.

The Dark Web Murders would be a great read for someone that enjoys a bit more darkness in their crime dramas. As well, the story would be an excellent match for anyone who enjoys when several different plot threads diverge and then come back together in the end for a thrilling climax. Due to the mildly graphic nature of some of the descriptions, I would not recommend that any person with squeamish or delicate sensitivities read this book.
