The Spirit of Want, a captivating mystery novel written by William H. Coles will keep your attention until the very last page. The mysteries of the novel will be clear as you read within the three parts of the novel. New characters with new stories and new settings will appear with each part which make the novel more complex and hence more interesting.
Lucy MacMiel, a 34-year-old woman who practice law, is the adopted daughter of a powerful rich man, A.J. MacMiel. Though Lucy is a beautiful successful woman, she always feels inferior to Elizabeth, her sister and the biological daughter of A.J. MacMiel and Agnes. Lucy gets married to Luke Osbourne, an ambitious successful eye surgeon,after the catastrophic events of an awkward car accident. They get a baby girl, Jennifer. Being unready to be a mom, Lucy hires a live-in nanny to take care of Jennifer. As a way of avoiding her baby, Lucy immerses herself in her work, working on the case of a popular evangelist, Hower Bain, who is accused of rape. This case turns Lucy's life upside down. New relationships are built and other relationships are ruined. Luke Osbourne discovers some medical mistakes and its cover-ups at the hospital where he works for A.j. MacMiel, his boss and his father-in-law. Would he keep silent? Would he stand against his boss to achieve justice? What happens next is your turn to discover.
This book is skillfully written and constructed. William Coles seems to have done many researches in the medical, legal, and religious fields to come up with this brilliant book. In The Spirit of Want, you will find a vivid picture of reality. By using action verbs and powerful adjectives, Coles manages to successfully deliver his story to the reader. Although the mood of the novel is serious and tense, the writer uses some literal devices which adds a touch of beauty on it. The writer was successful in choosing The Spirit of Want as the tittle of the novel, since want and desire control all the characters of the novel. Lucy, Luke, Elizabeth, and even A.J. are all led by their want and desire, each in a different way. Elizabeth's want and crave for children push her to work as a schoolteacher, although she has money for life.
The writer uses third-person narrator to tell the events of his novel. This technique enables the writer to analyze motives and feelings more objectively than a character can. Although Lucy makes many unforgivable mistakes, you will sympathize with her instead of hating her. The writer is always there to justify Lucy's actions, so you can feel her lack of confidence and insecurity. I, as a reader, can not say that Lucy is an evil character rather I can say she is a victim of her insecurity and wrong decisions. The feeling of being adopted and unappreciated by her family destroyed her. It makes her unable to understand people around her even her own family. She gets lost and does not know who really loves her or who deceives her in the name of love. With The Spirit of Want, there is no happy ending. It is a heartbreaking novel with an unexpected end.
This book deserves 4 out of 4 stars. It is a hard-to-put novel. You can feel the efforts that Coles has exerted to come up with this novel from the first page. It is a book that deserves to be remembered. You will experience many different feelings while reading it.
