Kids grow up idolizing superheroes. Hours of childhood play are dedicated to fighting crime as the caped crusader, leaping over buildings in a single bound, practicing karate kicks while eating pizza. Everyone wants to be the superhero who saves the day from impending peril.
The childhood games may wain was we enter into adulthood, but our superheroes are still with us. We debate which superhero is the best, pour over movie details, collect figurines to dust on our mantels. Our superheroes of the past coming back to our present with new movies, spinoffs, and fandoms.
What we didn’t realize as children, and odds are still don’t, is that we are superheroes in our own right. “Toni the Superhero” attempts to teach today’s children they too can be superheroes even if they can’t fly, aren’t bulletproof, and don’t have a Bat Cave.
We are all super by being ourselves. Our interests make us unique. Doing tasks, no matter what size, to assist others helps might their days a little brighter and easier, and perhaps puts a smile on their faces.
Toni the Superhero is shown doing things children can relate to: play, cleaning, eating. He is shown smiling through all of the various events, showing even the most mundane task can be fun. His good attitude and helpfulness puts a smile on his mother’s face.
Being a superhero who fights crime is great, but being an everyday superhero who helps make the world a better place one event and smile at a time is important too. You cannot always stop a bullet, but you can make others smile by being you.
I enjoyed this book. It’s an easy, fun read with bright, colorful pictures to hold small children’s attention. This book is also a good book for a beginning readers to read aloud with short sentences and illustrations to help them decipher words they don’t know yet. There wasn’t anything specific I didn’t like about the book nor did I see any typos.
I rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars. The illustrations were great and the story provides real world examples that can also lead to discussions for parents and children.
