Personally, I am fascinated by mermaids because they are free. They have the entire ocean to roam in. Their best friends are fishes.
I'm also into deep sea ecology and there are lots of things about the ocean that haven't been explore or discovered yet. Why can't mermaids be real?

This is honestly something I never would have thought to question. Now that I know there is a reference book, I find myself far more curious about this. I may have to start looking for these mermaid statues!

Wow, it seems the wait and the weight are worth it all. I loved the "tales and tails" bit!

I always thought that sirens and mermaids were the same. (Mermaid in Filipino is "sirena." These days, gay men are also called "sirena.") Is there anything in the book about mermen as well?

I want that book on my coffee table!

Me too, it's a fascinating subject. I love watching documentaries about the deep ocean. More people have been to space than have been to the bottom of the Marianas Trench. Who knows what's down there?

I know, I had no idea there were so many. Most are in Europe, often on fountains - there are some like that at the Rockefeller Center too. Maybe check the website? Thanks for your comment.

Hola, mi amiga! The author tells me about Sirena and Siyokoy in Philippine folklore. I wondered about mermen when I started the book too. Some of the statues and myths feature them, but a lot depict an individual mermaid.

I didn't even know there was such a thing as mermaid statutes. I think I'd enjoy reading a book about them and their history! With the 4 star rating, I'm very intrigued. Thanks for another great review. I'll have to check this one out.

I know - I'd seen the one in Copenhagen of course, but hadn't thought about there being a pattern all over the planet. Thanks for your response!

What a fascinating book. I never would've thought there'd be so much to learn about the tales surrounding mermaids before reading your review. This sounds like a very informative and well-written book on an intriguing subject. Great review!

Yes, it's amazing how you don't really think about it, but there's so much to learn on the subject. Thanks for your response.

What a beautiful review. You write very well. This sounds like a lovely book. I just heard a program about a mermaid society on NPR and was fascinated by the large numbers of people who are attracted to mermaids and all things mer. I will check this book out. Thanks again for the great review.

Hi, I remember your insightful review of From Drift to Shift. Yes, it's interesting how many people are fascinated by partially human sea-creatures. A society sounds interesting! Thanks for your comment.

Interesting book. The author combined the myths and a research work on mermaids. I have read many children books on mermaids and their connection with humans. However, this adult book is a nice gift for those interested to unearth mermaid's history. Thanks for this comprehensive review.
