Toni The Superhero is a children’s book written by R.D. Base. With a bright red cape, a blue suit, yellow mask, boots and gloves and a big ‘T’ on his chest, Toni is a superhero that loves to do ordinary things with his friends, and always enjoys helping out around the house with his family.

This book is a great encouragement for children to become engaged with reading while also getting inspired to be just like Toni. Children need a role model, and often copy the actions of others that they admire. As Toni appears to be an early teen, which is older than the target audience, the younger readers will look up to Toni and want to be just like him.

The colours and illustrations are also very engaging. The bold, bright colours are eye-catching, making the readers want to look at the pictures even more to see what Toni is up to.

Toni’s main activities include reading, playing with his friends, helping with chores around the house, and generally just being very active. Toni promotes good behaviour, heathy eating and teaches children how to be make friends and shows the fun ways to do regular exercise.

The language used is very simple and easy for the younger target audience to understand. The author uses only a short, single sentence on each page with detailed and fun images that illustrate the text.

The book cover nicely represents the different things that Toni enjoys doing and gives the readers an insight into what will be included in the story. I particularly like the message that this book portrays. A superhero is a great character to use to get children interested, but instead of focusing on what kind super powers Toni has, we see him acting like all of the other children, being helpful and taking part in regular, everyday activities. It’s lovely to see that the story includes the sections showing that Toni enjoys helping his mother with chores around the house, as this is a great quality to learn from an early age.

I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book has been designed perfectly to suit its audience and I believe it will be very effective with what it aims to achieve. This book is great for younger children and although some may not be able to read it themselves yet, it’s a great story for adults to read to them during story time. I would recommend it to anyone who has young children in their family.
