The title of this book is very fitting in many ways. From the beginning of the book, where Darwin meets an unexpected stranger on the airplane who reappears in his life in the book-Darwin is faced with many obstacles. His new guardian gives him what seems like very tough love, but as the story progresses you see the guardians actions towards other people in his life are very similar. It almost seems as if the guardian is so self absorbed he does not care about anyone but himself, but we see a caring side of him late in the story at a breaking point. Darwin’s unexpected mentor takes a great interest in Darwin and treats Darwin as his own son. This mentee mentor relationship opens many doors for Darwin. Darwin’s tragic family loss followed by his deceitful cousin as his new guardian and controller of his money, left Darwin almost unable to experience the great education and life his parents would have wanted.
Darwin’s relationship with the women in his life from Sweeney to Helen to Pearlstein to Domonique all were very unique and each taught DArwin a little something. From Darwin’s innocence as a young boy to his almost forever love, to an unexpected love ending. The book separated into 3 parts progress appropriately through Darwin’s life. You see changes in Darwin character throughout the book.
Towards the end of the book, the disappearance of Betsy leads the book down a mystery/drama turn and we see a side of Luther we have not seen before. The change in pace of the book is interesting and good.
In the final part of the book we see some changes to Darwin’s character. We see a deeply troubled relationship that did have warning signs, that Darwin ignored. We see Darwin become so involved in his career, we wonder if Darwin will find real love. Darwin’s loyalness to the end with his mentor as well as Helen shows throughout the book and speaks on Darwins character.
Overall this was a good read, with great characters. Each character had unique characteristics that really pulled the story together. Darwin’s experience with each character was unique and rewarding in some way. I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars. I don’t give this book 4 stars as it had some parts that dragged on but otherwise it was a good read.
